In an interview yesterday with Real News on Sunday, the United States Ambassador to Athens, Geoffrey Pyatt, had high praise for Greece, saying that the two countries share common objectives.
Referring to a balance of power in the Mediterranean, Pyatt remarked on how pleased his country was with Greece in its efforts to contain undue Russian and Chinese influence in the region, which is so often the focus of political tension and drama.
The ambassador stated “Our enhanced relationship with Greece is based on common goals and a considered strategy that recognizes the return of great power competition to the Eastern Mediterranean,” later saying that bilateral relations between the two countries were “at a historic, all-time high.”
Pyatt, who is an indefatigable promoter of strong US-Greek relations, stated in the interview that “Greece is a pillar of stability and a key NATO ally when it comes to halting expanding Russian and Chinese influence in an increasingly complicated strategic environment.”
He went on to add “We are pulling together all the strands of American power to face these challenges and to advance our shared defense and security goals.” It is believed that the American ambassador was making reference to the Greek-US Strategic Dialogue and the updated Mutual Defense and Cooperation Agreement between the two nations.
Pyatt also mentioned as examples of the new spirit of concord between Greece and the US the “3+1 Dialogue” on the part of Greece, Israel, and Cyprus, as well as the “East Med Act.”
The ambassador later Tweeted his welcome of David Tabor, the Air Force officer who is the general in charge of Special Operations Command Europe.
