On Monday, a total of 1,044 new cases of Covid-19 were diagnosed in Greece, a signal that the transmission of the virus in the country is declining due to the draconian lockdown measures put in place in early November. Although fewer cases were recorded on Monday, 600 patients are currently intubated in Greek hospitals, and 85 people with the virus died in the country in the last 24-hour period. Throughout the lockdown, Greece has consistently recorded an increase in daily case numbers, causing concern among officials that Greek citizens were not strictly following the state’s anti-virus measures. File photo The Greek defense ministry has established for the first time a military outpost on the island of Gavdos, the southernmost point of Greece, and is planning to do the same at the island of Othonoi, the country’s westernmost point. The outposts are small in size, but their establishment is seen as a symbolic act to reassure the local population and to show that Greece is determined to defend its most remote territories. The military outpost in Gavdos, with a capacity of nine soldiers, was established in the summer at Cape Tripiti which is the southernmost point of the island and Greece, and just lays to the immediate south of Crete. A total of 98 people died in the past 24 hours in Greece from complications from the novel coronavirus, according to the latest figures released by the Greek Public Health officials. 603 patients with COVID-19 are now being intubated across the country, compared to 606 yesterday. Additionally, 1,193 new infections were reported in the previous 24-hour period. Greece has now a total of 2,321 victims from the pandemic, with the country still struggling to grasp the magnitude of the second wave. On Saturday, the nation recorded the largest number of daily deaths, with a shocking 121 people being reported as dead by the virus.

South Wales Police said the pair had travelled from Essex and told officers they were heading to Cardiff to give gifts to relatives.
