Nearly 600 Intubations in Greece Wednesday Despite National Lockdown

A record-breaking 597 Covid-19 patients are now intubated in Greece and 87 people suffering from the virus died in the past 24 hours as health officials announced a total of 2,152 new cases on Wednesday.

The previous record for the highest number of intubated patients recorded in Greece was announced just yesterday, Tuesday, highlighting the increasingly critical situation regarding the virus in the country, where ICUs are at 81% capacity on average.

A total of 2,152 cases of the coronavirus were diagnosed in Greece over the last 24 hours, indicating that, despite the national lockdown in effect since early November, the presence of the virus in the country remains significant.

Of the 2,152 new cases announced in the country on Wednesday, just six were identified during testing at Greece’s points of entry.

In total, 97,288 cases of Covid-19 have been recorded in Greece since the beginning of the pandemic, including all those who have recovered from the virus. Of this total, 4,849 are associated with foreign travel and 25,291 with contact with a known case.

Of the 597 intubated patients, 81.6% are over the age of 70 or suffer from preexisting conditions. Their median age is 65, and 170 of the patients are female. A total of 505 patients have been discharged from ICUs around the country.

The 87 new deaths recorded on Wednesday bring the total number of fatalities in the country to 1,902. Of all those who lost their lives after suffering with the virus, a total of 759 have been women.

The median age of those who passed away with Covid-19 is 80, and 97.1% of them were over the age of 70 or suffered from underlying health issues.
