A total of 607 Covid-19 patients are now intubated in Greece and 101 people suffering from the virus died in the past 24 hours as health officials announced a total of 2,013 new cases on Friday.
Of these new cases announced in the country, just 14 were identified during testing at Greece’s points of entry.
Citing increased intubations and deaths in Greece, Vana Papaevangelou, a professor of Pediatric Infectious Diseases at the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens and a member of the special coronavirus committee, noted that the second wave doesn’t seem to be leaving the country anytime soon.
Papaevangelou warned that the country will be facing immense pressure due to the virus for the next seven to fourteen days in a press conference on Friday. Currently, ICUs in Greece are running at 88% capacity.
The esteemed pediatrician and epidemiologist noted that, although the number of new cases are slowly decreasing around the country, this is not occurring at the rate that experts hoped for.
In some areas of the country, especially in central, western, and northern Greece, the numbers of new cases are actually increasing, leading experts to believe that many Greeks are not strictly following the state’s anti-virus measures.
Most of the 2,013 new cases diagnosed in Greece on Friday were recorded in Attica, home to the capital city of Athens, where there were 319 new cases, and Thessaloniki, Greece’s second largest city, where 545 cases were found.
Areas outside of the two largest urban centers have also started to record an increase in cases, causing new worry amongst health officials. The central Greek city of Larissa had 106 new cases, and 97 new cases were diagnosed in Serres, northern Greece on Friday.
In total, 101,287 cases of Covid-19 have been recorded in Greece since the beginning of the pandemic, including all those who have recovered from the virus. Of this total, 4,865 are associated with foreign travel and 26,718 with contact with a known case.
Of the 607 intubated patients, 79.7% are over the age of 70 or suffer from preexisting conditions. Their median age is 65, and 169 of the patients are female. A total of 538 patients have been discharged from ICUs around the country.
The 101 new deaths recorded on Friday bring the total number of fatalities in the country to 2,102. Of all those who lost their lives after suffering with the virus, a total of 842 have been women.
The median age of those who passed away with Covid-19 is 80, and 97% of them were over the age of 70 or suffered from underlying health issues.
