Manchester United captain Harry Maguire said that “the truth cannot be hidden” after he was sentenced to 21 months in jail by a Greek court on Tuesday. At the same time, his partner accused Greek authorities of lying in order to ruin his reputation.
Maguire, 27, was sentenced in absentia to a suspended 21-month-prison term by a Syros court after being convicted of a Mykonos altercation.
He was charged with aggravated assault, assaulting a policeman, resisting arrest and attempting to bribe a police officer, after a brawl between his group and another group of people on a Mykonos street last Thursday.
The famous footballer, who intends to appeal, claimed that he was the victim as soon as he was informed of the verdict. He posted a quote from Buddha on Instagram implying that his sentence was the result of untruthful testimonies.
The quote read: “Three things can not be hidden for long: the sun, the moon and the truth – Buddha.” His sister, Daisy, posted the exact same phrase a few hours after her brother was found guilty.
Maguire’s legal woes have forced England national team manager Gareth Southgate to announce the player’s suspension from the squad. “In light of the developments, I can confirm the departure of Harry Maguire from the England national team for the games against Iceland and Denmark,” he said in a statement.
The footballer – who is the highest paid defender in the world – was not present at the trial that took place on Syros. He was found guilty of assault against a police officer, public insult and attempted bribery of a police officer.
Maguire wrote in a statement: “After the hearing, I have instructed my legal team with immediate effect to inform the courts of our appeal. I remain strong and confident in our innocence in this matter – if nothing else myself, my family and friends are the victims.”
Another Manchester United player arrives on Mykonos
Only days after the adventurous stay of his fellow player on Mykonos, Manchester United midfielder Jesse Lingard arrived on the island on Tuesday , accompanied by a friend and a bodyguard.
The 28-year-old man is not only a professional football player, but he is also involved in fashion design. He owns the casual clothing brand JLINGZ.
