Greece has vowed to continue its support for the Lebanese people who are struggling to return to normalcy following the deadly explosion in Beirut earlier in August.
Authorities in Athens announced recently that they are sending a Greek Navy vessel carrying food, medicine, medical supplies and construction materials.
The vessel “Ikaria” will depart from Salamina on Friday, September 11. This will be the second shipment of humanitarian aid to the Lebanese people.
The aid will be delivered to the army, whose special units receive, coordinate and distribute humanitarian aid to the final recipient.
The program for the implementation of this action was officially announced on Thursday at a press conference by Deputy Foreign Minister for Economic Diplomacy Costas Frangogiannis, who also appealed to private donors to assist in this important project.
“Our country, responding to the request of the Lebanese authorities for assistance, has decided to stand in solidarity once again with the Lebanese people and to continue providing humanitarian assistance,” he said.
He noted that the items to be sent respond to the request of the Lebanese authorities for help in the meetings he had when he visited Beirut, 18 hours after the devastating explosion in the port of the city, on August 4, accompanying the first mission Greek humanitarian aid.
