President of the Hellenic Republic Katerina Sakellaropoulou, in a Christmas and New Year message for Greeks abroad on Thursday, noted that “2021 is arriving and raising our hopes for an end to the pandemic and a gradual return to normal social life.”
Sakellaropoulou also referred to the challenges Greece had to face throughout 2020 on a national, economic and social level, while adding that 2021 has another strong historic symbolism for all Greeks, as the 200th anniversary of the Greek Revolution against the Ottoman Rule provides an opportunity for national introspection and creative reflection.
“It calls upon us to consider what we have achieved as a nation in these 200 years, to cultivate our collective self-knowledge, to collect our internal forces in order to meet contemporary challenges, guided by the abiding values bequeathed to us by our ancestors’ struggle for freedom and self determination,” she added.
The President called upon Greeks abroad to be active supporters and partners of this effort, underlining that their bond with Greece, a blend of historic experience, memory and feelings, has been expressed and is expressed practically and on multiple levels, while reassuring them that Greece always acknowledges their contribution.
