Greek PM Visits Earthquake-Stricken Samos in Midst of Mourning of Teenagers’ Death

Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis on Saturday visited Samos to speak to the earthquake-stricken islanders and express his condolences to the parents of the two teenagers who lost their lives.

Mitsotakis, with General Secretary of Citizen Protection Nikos Hardalias, first visited the spot where the two young people lost their lives, 15-year-old Claire and 17-year-old Aris. He then met with the parents of the two teenagers and had a private conversation. He also visited spots on the island that have suffered damages.

The island is trying to recover from the wounds left by the earthquake, while at the same time mourn the loss of the two young lives.

The two teenagers were crushed by a wall of a dilapidated house while passing on the street. Nineteen people were injured, two of them seriously.

Island residents spent the night in tents, in hotels, or their cars after the devastating earthquake which hit 6.7 points on the Richter scale caused damages to buildings, vehicles and infrastructure.

Residents spent the night away from the coastal zone, as aftershocks continued throughout the night. By 5 in the morning, almost 60 aftershocks were recorded by the Geodynamic Institute of Athens, with three of them being of the order of 4.1 and 4.2 points on the Richter scale, while the vast majority were over 3 points.

The Civil Protection Secretariat along with the Ministry of Infrastructure have set up tents for meetings that took place on Friday in Karlovasi and Vathi. On Saturday, they made a more detailed assessment of the damages on the island.

Rolls-Royce Names Panos Kakoullis New CFO
