A total of 1,211 cases of Covid-19 were diagnosed in the country over the last day, and 12 deaths were recorded in those who had suffered with the virus.
This comes after 1,547 cases were recorded on Wednesday — by far the highest number of Covid-19 cases recorded in Greece in a one-day period since the start of the pandemic.
The record for the highest number of cases diagnosed in one day in Greece has been broken six times in the month of October alone.
Of the total new cases announced on Thursday, 47 are linked to known outbreaks across the country, and 35 were identified during testing at Greece’s points of entry.
Attica, home to Greece’s capital city of Athens, has 335 of Thursday’s 1,211 cases, and Thessaloniki, Greece’s second most populous city, has 275 cases.
A lockdown has been put in place in Thessaloniki, as well as in the cities of Larissa and Rodopi, due to the increase in cases there.
In a message to the Greek public, Deputy Minister for Civil Protection Nikos Chardalias announced the lockdowns, which will begin on Monday morning.
In total, 35,510 cases of Covid-19 have been recorded in Greece since the beginning of the pandemic, including all those who have recovered from the virus. Of this total, 4,043 are associated with foreign travel and 12,843 with contact with a known case.
There are currently 114 intubated patients in intensive care units around Greece. Their median age is 65, and just 34 are women.
Of the intubated patients, 91.2% are over the age of 70 or suffer from preexisting conditions. A total of 284 patients have been discharged from ICUs in the country.
The 12 new deaths recorded on Thursday bring the number of total fatalities in the country to 615. Of those who lost their lives after suffering with the virus, 234 have been women.
The median age of those who passed away with Covid-19 was 79, and 96.3% of them were over the age of 70 or had underlying health issues.
