According to reports in the Greek media, a 74-year-old woman from Kozani, in northern Greece, was asked to leave a Sunday Liturgy yesterday for donning a surgical face mask.
According to Greek broadcaster ERT, the hieromonk Ignatios, who officiates at the monastery of Agia Paraskevi in Milchori, stopped the service as soon as he saw a parishioner begin to put on a surgical mask and asked her to leave the building, declaring that “the church is no place for a carnival.”
The woman reportedly refused to leave the service. Later the hieromonk was interviewed by state broadcaster ERT. He protested to interviewers then that the entire global coronavirus pandemic was part of a plan devised by what he called a “global dictatorship.”
The monastery does not appear to be under the aegis of the local Metropolis of FLorina, Prespes and Eordaia and the monks who officiate there may have broken off their obedience to the Patriarchate under Bartholomew.
