After a test run in early September, the all-new lighting for the Parthenon will be officially unveiled on Wednesday, September 30.
Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis, along with other European leaders, will attend the ceremony on the Acropolis on Wednesday evening.
The new lighting, designed by Eleftheria Deko, a noted specialist in the field, better highlights the breathtaking beauty of the monument.
The ambitious project to better display the beauties of the ancient building was announced by Prime Minister Mitsotakis and Minister of Culture Lina Mendoni in October of 2019.
Since then, Deko and her team have worked tirelessly to analyze the Parthenon from all angles, in order to best illuminate the iconic monument.
Additionally, the Erectheion, highlighted by the stunning Caryatids along its sides, along with the Propylaia, or gateway to the Parthenon, will be lit with the same warm yellow-gold lighting as the Parthenon itself.
The recent trial run of the new lighting received widespread attention after Deko posted stunning pictures of the Parthenon with the full moon between its columns on her social media accounts.
In the post, she highlighted the hard work of her team as well as what she considers her “duty” to work on the most famous site in Greece, which she feels is a great honor. Deko considers it one of the highlights of her professional career.
