The slopes of the great mountain tragically were the scene of two deaths on Thursday, as rescuers found two snowboarders, Greek men aged 47 and 52, who had succumbed to an avalanche.
The incident occurred at Xerolaki where there had been a group of three snowboarders making their way along the mountain’s trails. An avalanche suddenly slammed into the group which crushed the two victims, while the third, who was able to escape, alerted rescue crews.
Four rescuers from the 8th EMAK, eight from the 2nd EMAK (Thessaloniki) and four from the Elassona Fire Department were immediately dispatched to the area. One of the two snowboarders was initially found dead after an hour of intensive search, and rescue crews rescued the other man from the snow.
