The first international flight landed on the island of Kos from Germany on Monday, days before Greece’s regional airports open for tourists on July 1.
The special TUI Fly flight from Germany had 170 doctors on board, with Greek Minister of Tourism Haris Theoharis, welcoming the group.
The Dodecanese Island of Kos is forever associated with its most famous son, the physician and Priest of Asklepius, Hippocrates, known as “The Father of Medicine.”
According to TUI Group, which is a British-German multinational travel and tourism company, the trip of German doctors to Greece is “symbolic in recognition and gratitude for their contribution against the spread of the coronavirus in Germany.”
As Greece’s airports open on July 1, Deputy Minister for Crisis Management Nikos Hardalias said that “All Greek airports will open on Wednesday on conditions of safety.”
“We want tourism to move on, it is a priority, but this will be held without a single discount to the public health. Tourists coming to Greece should be safe and all the islanders that will welcome them must also remain safe,” Hardalias also added.
Health officials have also stressed the importance of tourists to comply with Covid-19 protocols, whether it comes to general health or testing.
Travelers flying internationally will be obligated to fill out a “Passenger Locator Form,” 48 hours before their airport-check in. The PLF was issued recently on June 27 by Greece’s Civil Aviation Authority, where tourists are required to fill out their health history.
Those who test positive for the coronavirus will also be accommodated in “quarantine hotels” for at least 7 days in order to self-isolate and prevent further spreading.
